Val

We arrived in Napoli (Naples) at noontime, 3 hours late, after an overnight ride through the Italian countryside from Milan. We saw some sheep and cows, as well as indeterminate crops. Our expected driver was 45 mins. late meeting us at the railroad station, as the parking was a problem. While awaiting his arrival, we all had our passports checked and recorded by the police. We are such a dangerous looking group. The Italian drivers navigating narrow roads led us to believe that two of the best businesses here must be auto body repair and life insurance. The motor bike drivers are even more insane.

After a white-knuckle ride from Napoli to Sorrento on the coast, we checked into yet another lovely hotel, ate lunch by the pool, rested, read, napped, and/or explored the narrow streets/alleys and their shops. All afternoon we were entertained by the music from a nearby wedding reception. Most of the songs were oldies, many covered in Italian by unknown performers. Dinner in the top-floor restaurant was followed by drinks on the roof-top bar with amazing night-time views of the surrounding area.

The view from the rooftop terrace. They tell us that all the rooftops are open to the public, so we’re planning on checking out another hotel Wednesday night.

  1. Sounds like the perfect day after to recover from the train adventure and what a glorious view! So riding the trains in Italy is like flying? i.e. you need your passport for ID to get tickets? I wouldn’t have thought of that but we never rode the trains during our trip. You do look like a pretty dangerous group though!

    1. The police seemed to be selecting people randomly to ask for passports. There was no line one had to go through for entry control. Weird.

  2. Re the rooftop view – is that large green lighted space a tennis club? IF not, any idea what it is?

    1. No, it’s not a tennis court. It’s netting over a vegetable garden, probably growing tomatos. We saw many, many such greenhouses in and around Sorrento.
